House of Petko R. Slaveykov
The house of the Bulgarian poet Petko R. Slaveykov was restored in 1971. Slaveykov’s monument is opposite the house.
Petko Rachov Slaveykov (17 November 1827 – 1 July 1895) was a noted nineteenth-century Bulgarian poet, publicist, public figure and folklorist. Slaveykov was born in Tarnovo. He became a teacher in 1843. Slaveykov engaged in important cultural and educational activity as well as in the struggle for an autonomous Bulgarian church. In 1877-1878 he took part in the Russian-Turkish war for the liberation of Bulgaria and in 1879 – in the first Bulgarian National Assembly. He died in 1895.
